A global 2024 report says expats' key drivers for relocating are pursuing better quality of life and career advancement

A recent global expat study conducted by Crown World Mobility, a company that specializes in relocation services, explores the changing landscape of global expatriation by analyzing data collected from a survey of 1,000 expatriates across seven key destinations and 79 countries of origin. The report examines key drivers of relocation, as well as the challenges faced by expats.

The global expat study discusses pros and cons faced by expat families.

1. Expats' key drivers for relocation

According to the study there are three key reasons why expats typically choose to relocate:

Better quality of life

The survey identified "a better quality of life" as the most common motivation for relocation. This encompasses a broad range of factors, including improved lifestyle, enhanced safety, and favorable financial prospects. For instance, the UAE has attracted many expats due to factors such as investment opportunities, permanent residency pathways, low crime rates, no personal income tax, abundant sunshine, and a strategic geographical location.

Career and professional development

Expats recognize the value of overseas assignments in fostering their professional growth. The survey found that relocation is often seen as a catalyst for career advancement and skill development. A significant majority of respondents (63%) believe their expat role has been a valuable investment for their organization.

Experiencing new cultures

The allure of new cultures and the desire to embrace novel experiences play a significant role in relocation decisions. Expats, particularly those based in Singapore, cited the willingness to immerse themselves in different cultural settings as a key driver for their move.

2. Challenges Faced by Modern Expats

The study highlights several challenges that emerge from the expat interviews - which to any experienced expats are probably unfortunately quite familiar issues:

Expenses

Rising expenses pose a substantial challenge for expats. Relocation packages have been affected by inflation, and the costs associated with flights, accommodation, and currency fluctuations have increased the financial burden of moving overseas. Over half of the respondents who had relocated previously reported that the process has become more expensive.

Moving belongings

The logistics of moving belongings across borders remain a challenge, although there is a growing trend among expats to move with fewer possessions. The survey suggests that modern expats tend to own less, particularly in terms of large furniture items.

Cultural integration

Adjusting to a new culture is a significant hurdle for many expats. The survey found that 65% of respondents found cultural adjustment "extremely" or "very challenging." Factors contributing to these difficulties include differences in working practices, social norms, language barriers, and daily lifestyle variations. (Previously Expat Bee has also explored the cultural issues for that can rise in an Italian workplace.)

Technological adaptation

Adapting to different technological ecosystems can pose challenges for expats, particularly in countries with distinct app infrastructures and varying levels of digital penetration. For instance, India's widespread "cashlessness" and unique app infrastructure, such as the UPI payment system, require adjustment for expats.

Convincing family to relocate

Relocating as a family presents unique challenges, as spouses and children may experience difficulties adjusting to a new environment. Convincing family members to embrace the move can be a significant obstacle. Spouses, in particular, may face challenges related to the loss of social connections, lack of employment opportunities, and feelings of isolation.

3. Impact of digitalization

The study notes that today digitalisation has more and more effect on the expat's experiences, with two aspects that are clearly standing out:

Benefit: Access to information

Technology has significantly enhanced the relocation experience by providing expats with easy access to information about their new home. Online resources, including relocation company websites, forums, social media, and government portals, enable expats to research various aspects of living abroad. Moreover, technology has streamlined processes such as visa applications, making them more efficient and less paper-intensive.

Challenge: Adapting to local digital ecosystems

Despite the advantages, technology also presents adaptation challenges, especially in countries with unique digital landscapes. Expats may encounter difficulties adjusting to different app infrastructures, mobile payment systems, and levels of digital penetration.

4. Sustainability and relocations

Expats are increasingly conscious of the environmental footprint associated with relocation. The survey indicates a rising awareness of the carbon emissions and resource consumption involved in international moves.

Awareness and adoption of sustainable practices

The relocation industry is witnessing a growing adoption of sustainable practices. The use of sustainable packing materials and the incorporation of electric vehicles into transportation fleets are becoming more commonplace. Expats are demonstrating more awareness and more willingness to take steps to reduce the environmental impact of their moves. for example, recycling belongings, exploring eco-friendly initiatives, and opting for sustainable transportation options are some measures expats are considering.

Limited availability of sustainable options

While there is a willingness to pay more for sustainable relocation services, the availability of such options may be limited. This suggests a need for the relocation industry to further develop and promote environmentally friendly solutions to meet the growing demand from expats.

5. Children and relocations

Children generally demonstrate remarkable adaptability and resilience when relocating to new countries. They tend to pick up languages and embrace new social norms more quickly than adults, showcasing a natural ability to adjust to unfamiliar environments.

Relocation can have positive impacts on children's education, providing them with access to international schools, diverse cultural experiences, and opportunities for personal growth. Exposure to different educational systems and perspectives can broaden their horizons and enhance their learning experiences.

However, teenagers may experience greater challenges in "fitting in" and require additional support in finding suitable schools and social groups. The social dynamics and pressures of adolescence can make adjusting to a new environment more complex for this age group.

The study concludes that increasing homogenization of youth culture, driven by social media and global apps, may be contributing to children's smoother adaptation to new environments. Shared online experiences and trends can create a sense of familiarity and connection for children, regardless of their geographical location.
